The Monday Cruises were more typical summer weather. The winds were from the Southeast at about 10 kts. The seas were 1-2 feet with some residual easterly swells. The ride was smooth….and the turns were brief and with little movement.
As I write the winds are fresh from the South at about 15 kts. The waves in our operating area are 2-3 feet. The forecast is for the winds to veer to the Southwest and drop to about 10 kts. This will bring the winds blowing off the shore and will make for a beautiful couple of days. This westerly wind will knock down (smooth out) the residual easterly swells and bring the conditions to near calm.
The next couple of days will be great cruising weather…..
Hurricanes: Dangerous semi-circle: You may hear this term on the weather channel or other forecasts. This is a very important term for a ships Captain’s when he is planning his “weather routing”. It is quite simple. You look at any satellite picture of a Hurricane from a “birds eye view”. You take the direction of the forward movement of the storm and you cut the storm in half along that line. (if the storm was moving directly north, you cut it in half with a north south line). You want to avoid the “right” half or semi-circle of the storm. The reason for this is because the storms winds are in a counter-clockwise direction and the storm as a whole is also moving ahead in this direction. This means on this side of the storm the effects of the combined motions will make the wind much stronger and the waves much bigger…..
